software update
Most recent release date: December 16, 2010
Infocast 8" SW version 1.0.5, FW 1.0.3548
Why does my device need updating?
This update addresses a rare issue where the Infocast may not retain its settings after a power cycle and require re-activation. It is recommended for all users of the 8" Insignia Infocast NS-DPF8CH.
The normal update installation process occurs via your network connection. The update process may take up to several minutes, depending on your bandwidth. We recommend that you not perform bandwidth-intensive activities on your computer (like downloading large files) during the update.
Will doing a software update wipe out any of my personal settings?
Installing updates will not overwrite any of your personal settings.
How to update your device
The device will automatically notify you when an update is available. The normal update installation process occurs "over-the-air" via your wi-fi during which your device will automatically reboot twice. The update process may take up to several minutes, depending on your wi-fi signal strength and bandwidth. We recommend that you not perform bandwidth-intensive activities (like downloading large files) during the update.
If there's a problem with the over-the-air update, you can update your device using a USB flash drive.
updating over-the-air
- When you see the Update Available screen, tap Now:
- Your device should reboot and automatically download the update.
Note: If you see the Special Options screen, tap Install updates and then tap Install from network (if this option is grayed out, it means you aren't connected to the network. Reboot your device and try again). - The device will install an update, reboot, and then install a second update. It's important that you let the device install both updates! When it's done, you'll briefly see the message "Update completed successfully" and then your widgets should start playing again — this means you've successfully updated your device.
updating with a USB flash drive
You can install the updates from a USB flash drive if the normal over-the-air process did not work.
- Download the file at http://files.chumby.com/resources/infocast-8/1-0-5/update.zip onto the top level of a USB flash drive (i.e., do not put it into a folder). DO NOT extract the file. The USB flash drive you're using must be formatted FAT16 or FAT32 — as long as you haven't formatted the drive as HFS on a Macintosh it should work.
- Turn off your device.
- Plug the USB drive into the USB port on the back of your device.
- While touching the screen, turn your device back on. You'll see this screen:
- Keep your finger on the touchscreen until you see the screen with "loading special options" on it. Once you see this screen you can take your finger off the screen:
- The Special Options screen will appear. Tap Install Updates.
- Tap Install from USB flash drive.
- The device will install an update, reboot, and then install a second update. It's important that you let the device install both updates! When it's done, you'll briefly see the message "Update completed successfully" and then your apps should start playing again — this means you've successfully updated your device!
- Finish by following all the onscreen set-up instructions.
Note: There may be a few USB flash drives that won't work correctly on the device. If your device is having problems seeing the USB flash drive you're using, try a different one.
